we’re building a mutual aid “machine”
Beanlandia is building a community. Our “members” are folks who have joined, many because they want to be part of community-building. This is a pre-requisite for “people powered mutual aid”. When there is a crisis or disaster - our group is able to be “activated”. This can mean donating funds to help someone in our community… or bringing clothing or other helpful supplies to help neighbors.
A few months after we got the keys to the building, a rather large tornado struck nearby Arabi. Our community members raised over $40,000 and we pivoted our space quickly to become a supply-drop off hub. We then worked to deliver supplies to the impacted neighborhood.
This “machine” can be activated when needed. People-power can have a big impact. That’s how we “love our city”
